Aug 11th: CW Boss on The Originals’s Future (and other CW shows)

Jen | Categories: Interviews, News, Season 4, Season 5, The Originals | Comments Off on CW Boss on The Originals’s Future (and other CW shows)

When Mark Pedowitz joined the CW five years ago, he made it be known that veteran Supernatural was one of his favorite shows. He got behind the series, upgraded its time slot and Supernatural got a second wind. Heading into Season 11, the series starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki may not be winding down soon.

“Jensen and Jared seem very happy, and I’m thrilled with the creative direction of the show,” Pedowitz said. “Creatively the show is terrific, and if the ratings hold, it would outlast me in this chair.”

As for the long-percolating Supernatural spinoff, “it is still a priority, it just hasn’t happened,” Pedowitz said.

Speaking of spinoffs, The Originals has been closely associated with the show that spawned it, How does the end of The Vampire Diaries bode for its offshoot? “I hope it lives very well on its own; I’m hopeful that we will see a fifth year,” Pedowitz said.

During the executive session, which began with Pedowitz doing a jig on stage to Settle For Me from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, he reenacted the negotiations for Supergirl, which moved from CBS to the CW in May. They went something like this: “Would you like Supergirl? Where do I sign?,” Pedowitz said.

As he noted at the upfronts, ratings expectations for the import are pretty high. “It won’t do as well as it did on CBS but I anticipate it will be out Ni.1 or N.2 show behind The Flash,” he said.

In an early encouraging sign, the CW is airing Supergirl repeats this summer which have gotten traction on the new network.

Jul 20th: Chris Wood Joins Supergirl Season 2 as ‘Surprise’ Series Regular

Jen | Categories: Casting News, Chris Wood, Non TVD Projects, TV Series | Comments Off on Chris Wood Joins Supergirl Season 2 as ‘Surprise’ Series Regular

It’s safe to say someone over at The CW is a big Chris Wood fan.

The veteran of Vampire Diaries, Carrie Diaries and, most recently, Containment, is joining Supergirl in a series-regular role that’s shrouded in secrecy, TVLine has learned exclusively. All that we know is that the actor will be playing a surprise DC Comics character, and that he’ll make his debut early into the series’ second season.

Supergirl has made a number of significant casting moves as it transitions from CBS to The CW, most notably tapping Teen Wolf‘s Tyler Hoechlin to guest-star as Superman. Other key hires include erstwhile Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, as president of Supergirl‘s United States, Cougar Town alum Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr, a journalist appointed by Cat (Calista Flockhart) to serve as the editor-in-chief of CatCo Magazine, and Floriana Lima (The Family) as gay Metropolis Special Crimes Unit captain Maggie Sawyer.

Wood, meanwhile, recently landed a recurring role in the second season of PBS’ Civil War drama Mercy Street. He’ll play Lance Van Der Berg, a handsome Union captain lodging at the Green home, where he strikes up a budding romance with AnnaSophia Robb’s Alice.

Supergirl Season 2 premieres Monday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c.

May 23rd: The CW Switching Stations in Chicago

Jen | Categories: The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, TV Series | Comments Off on The CW Switching Stations in Chicago

Vampire Diaries fans in Chicago can kiss those sports-related preemptions goodbye.

The CW announced on Monday that starting Sept. 1, the Fox Television-owned WPWR-TV will be the network’s new home in the nation’s third-largest TV market, replacing WGN-TV (which is becoming an independent station).
“We love high-quality, big-budget, first-run prime and we love having more original programming,” Frank Cicha, SVP of Programming of Fox Television Stations, said in a statement. “But most of all, we love moving to The CW the same time as Supergirl.”

WGN’s parent company in turn touted no longer having to bump CW programs for Cubs, White Sox, Bulls and Hawks games.
“As an independent television station, we’ll have the opportunity to bring more primetime baseball, basketball and hockey games to Chicago sports fans on weeknights [and] add some popular syndicated programming,” Tribune Broadcasting President of Broadcast Media Larry Wert said in a statement. “Importantly, we’ll also avoid having to move any games off of WGN-TV to accommodate network programming.”
The CW also announced that it had extended its affiliate agreements with WPIX-TV in New York, KTLA in Los Angeles, KDAF in Dallas, WDCW in Washington, DC, KIAH in Houston, WSFL-TV in Miami, KWGN-TV in Denver, KPLR-TV in St. Louis, KRCW-TV in Portland, WCCT-TV in Hartford, WGNT in Norfolk and WNOL-TV in New Orleans.

May 19th: CW Boss Defends Benching Originals, Touts Next Fall’s ‘Biggest Ever’ Superhero Crossover Event

Jen | Categories: Interviews, Season 4, The Originals, TV Series | Comments Off on CW Boss Defends Benching Originals, Touts Next Fall’s ‘Biggest Ever’ Superhero Crossover Event

The Originals failed to secure a spot on The CW’s fall schedule, but there’s no need administer last rites to the Vampire Diaries spinoff.

In a conference call on Thursday morning, network president Mark Pedowitz spoke of his decision to hold the show until midseason, telling reporters, “We have a very strong schedule. We still believe quite a bit in The Originals. We only have 10 hours, so we made a choice to [hold it] to further boost our schedule at midseason.”

Pedowitz also shot down speculation that Vampire Diaries upcoming eighth season would be its last. “No decision has been made one way or the other,” he maintained, before adding, “My dream is it isn’t [the final season].
