In honor of late camera assistant Sarah Jones, Warner Bros. Television Group and the Vampire Diaries production team have joined with the International Cinematographers Guild and SIM Digital to offer an annual internship and job training program.

“Sarah was a beloved member of our camera crew,” said Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plac in a statement. “Her family at The Vampire Diaries is excited to honor her memory by providing opportunities and opening doors for more people like her.”

Jones died in Feb. 2014 on the set of Midnight Rider after getting struck by a freight train. Now, the Sarah Jones Opportunity wants to give aspiring Gerogia-area filmmakers access to the entertainment industry by presenting the participant a 20-week paid internship/camera training, work experience at an Atlanta-based Warner Bros. production, and membership eligibility for the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600.

Chelsea Craig, the program’s first participant, completed her training and is now a member of the ICG.

The teams behind The Vampire Diaries and spinoff The Originals have organized a walk-a-thon to honor Sarah Jones, the camera assistant who died earlier this year.

Jones, who was a crewmember on Vampire Diaries, died Feb. 20 in Georgia while working on the Gregg Allman biopic Midnight Rider during an on-set accident involving a train. Monday, Sept. 22, would have been her 28th birthday.

To honor her, the 5K walk-a-thon has been set to take place Sunday, Oct. 5, in Atlanta, with all proceeds going to the newly created Sarah Jones Film Foundation. Sarah’s parents, Richard and Elizabeth Jones of Columbia, S.C., created the foundation, with proceeds to be divided among on-set safety awareness initiatives, educational scholarships and social media outreach via Slates for Sarah.

Jones’ parents, along with her brother Eric, will lead the participants in the walk. Walkers also will live-tweet from the event to spread the word and raise money via online donation links using #SafetyForSarah. The Twitter account @SlatesForSarah will provide updates.

More information can be found here. Donations are being accepted here or can be sent directly to:

Hollywood is banding together to honor one of their own, and it’s truly a beautiful sight.

Sarah Jones, a 27-year-old camera assistant known for working on many movies and TV shows like “The Vampire Diaries,” was tragically hit and killed by a train while working on the new Greg Allman biopic, “Midnight Rider,” earlier this year.

On Thursday (Feb. 20), “Slates for Sarah” was born. The campaign, created by Jones’ friends and families, began on Facebook, where her coworkers in the film and TV industry can post photos of their film slates dedicated to her.
The page “Slates for Sarah” already has over 18,000 likes and shows like “TVD,” “Glee,” “Supernatural,” “The Mindy Project,” “Castle,” “Grimm,” “Revenge” and many more have already posted heartwarming slate dedications to Jones.
But that’s not all “Slates for Sarah” is aiming to achieve. Jones’ friends are also petitioning to get the Academy Awards to include her in the “In Memoriam” segment during the awards show on Sunday (March 2). “Crew members are the unsung heroes of film and television production who work long hours and sometimes very dangerous conditions for the love of filmmaking,” the petition reads. “Sarah Elizabeth Jones was one of us.”

The petition has almost reached its initial goal of 13,000 signatures, and was recently updated explaining that the new objective is to acquire as many signatures as possible for submission to the Academy by Friday (Feb. 28) at 10 a.m. PT.

You can sign the petition here. Our thoughts are with Jones’ friends and family.

Vampire Diaries Crew Member Dies, Executive Producer Julie Plec Confirms

Tragedy struck the The Vampire Diaries family Thursday when one crew member passed away unexpectedly while on the set of another project. While there aren’t many details yet, showrunner Julie Plec has taken to Twitter to confirm the terrible news.

“The #TVDFamily lost a loved one today. RIP beautiful Sarah Jones,” showrunner Julie Plec tweeted early Friday morning.

Sarah Jones, a second camera assistant for TVD, was with another crew shooting the biopic Midnight Rider in Savannah, Georgia when she and other crew members were struck by a train during filming. The crew had been setting up a shot on train tracks when an unexpected train made its way down the tracks. WSAV reports that Sarah died while at least seven other crew members were injured.

Though Julie confirmed Friday morning, Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy Gilbert) took to social media on February 20 to share the terrible news.

“Truly saddened to hear about the passing of a friend… R.I.P. Sarah Jones,” Steven tweeted Thursday night.

With The Vampire Diaries well into its fifth season, it’s clear that the entire cast and crew of the CW show is like family. The actors and those behind the scenes are always hanging out and have grown close over the past five years — and that will continue now that the show has been renewed for Season 6.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Vampire Diaries family as well as Sarah’s close ones.
