What do today’s Mystic Falls headlines read? This: Local Law Enforcer Lands New Gig as Screenwriter!

That’s right — Sheriff Forbes has an exciting career opportunity lined up! While she’s still going to continue protecting the residents of her town (and flirting with Damon Salvatore) to the best of her abilities, the actress who plays her — Marguerite MacIntyre — has been tapped to join The Vampire Diaries spin-off as a writer.

Liz Tigelaar, who writes for the enticing A&E series Bates Motel, announced the news on Twitter recently when she congratulated the actress on her creative new role: “Congrats to @Caryshotwife who not only rocks sheriff pants on #TVD but is also a writer on #TheOriginals. #yay #doublethreat.”

The Originals centers on the tough yet vulnerable members of the Mikaelson clan, as Klaus (Joseph Morgan) returns to the melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans — a town he helped build centuries ago. Klaus’ questions lead him to a reunion with his former protégé, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), a charismatic vampire who has total control over the human and supernatural inhabitants of New Orleans. Determined to help his brother find redemption, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) follows Klaus and soon learns that Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) has also come to the French Quarter searching for clues to her family history, only to have fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie (Daniella Pineda) who reveals that Hayley is pregnant with Klaus’ child.

Congrats to Marguerite! We can’t wait to see what sorts of dramatic scenarios and romantic debacles she has in store for Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, Marcel and all the mysterious creatures of New Orleans. Perhaps she’ll vouch on behalf of crossover opportunities, such as Liz and Caroline (Candice Accola) embarking on a mother-daughter road trip to the Big Easy where Liz meets the man of her dreams and Caroline and Klaus hit up a local cafe for beignets and jazz music. Just a suggestion!

‘Vampire Diaries’ Taking Advantage of Social Media Buzz

Author: Jen | January 29, 2013 | Comments Off on ‘Vampire Diaries’ Taking Advantage of Social Media Buzz

It pays to be a watercooler show.

The CW’s hit drama The Vampire Diaries was the most buzzed-about television series for the week of Jan. 21-27, topping Trendrr.TV’s list of most social primetime broadcast shows.

In an effort to ramp up awareness for Thursday’s “Catch Me If You Can,” several castmembers – including Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder – participated in a live Twitter session with executive producer/showrunner Julie Plec during the episode’s broadcast. A hashtag, #TVDparty, was specifically created for the occasion – and was often among the top 10 trending topics at various points of the evening.

Across multiple social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, GetGlue and Viggle, Vampire Diaries generated nearly 865,000 interactions, taking over the top spot from Fox’s American Idol.

For a serialized drama such as Vampire Diaries, which inspires several Twitter trending topics during any given Thursday broadcast, social dominance is crucial – especially when ratings are usually a fraction of what other networks normally average. For The CW, however, Vampire Diaries remains the network’s most dependable show, often serving as a launch pad for rookie TV dramas like The Secret Circle and Beauty and the Beast.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ is the most buzzed-about show of the week: Why that matters

If TV shows were ranked by the social media frenzy they incite instead of by Nielsen’s antiquated, unreliable ratings, The CW would be sitting pretty. First, GetGlue named “Supernatural” the most talked-about show of 2012, and now, Trendrr (another social media monitoring service) announces that “The Vampire Diaries” was the most social program last week.

Executive producer Julie Plec and cast members Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Zach Roerig, Kat Graham, and Claire Holt promoted the hashtag #TVDParty. They even answered fan questions from the set during the east coast airing of “Catch Me If You Can,” which aired on Thursday, January 24. The episode generated 865,000 social interactions on Twitter, Facebook, GetGlue and Viggle. (No, we didn’t know Viggle was a thing, either, but… yay?)

Here’s why this matters: The CW and Warner Bros. are paying attention to your online activity. That can only be good news for the shows you love — and love to talk about. The network and studio pushed a press release to the media and promoted a blog post about the achievement. Networks’ focus on Nielsen ratings is shifting as they realize that there are more effective ways of measuring a show’s popularity — which is good news for all cult hits, particularly those with middling ratings.

Of course, that’s not to say that “Vampire Diaries” isn’t a ratings hit by CW standards; it remains one of their most reliable shows, along with “Arrow” and “Supernatural,” and isn’t in danger of being canceled. But for other shows, like “Nikita” and “Hart of Dixie,” social buzz can only help increase chances of renewal next season, especially with such a strong crop of pilots at the network.

So keep tweeting, liking, and checking in — it can only help you keep your faves on the air.
