Each TV season brings us a new batch of characters to get to know, and — if we’re lucky — love. New faces like Tyrion on Game of Thrones and New Girl’s Jess made an impression on us in no time, which is part of the reason we keep tuning in to their shows. Of course, it’s not just freshman series that get the fresh meat; old favorites like The Office and The Vampire Diaries also introduced new characters this year. Now it’s time to narrow it down to just one: who is the best new TV character of 2011?

Why Vampire Diaries Kicks Twilight’s Butt

Not to knock Edward, Bella, and Jacob, but the best vamp love triangle airs Thursday nights on the CW. That was the overall consensus when we asked for reasons why you think The Vampire Diaries is better than Twilight (a subjective question we know) on our Wetpaint Entertainment fan wiki.

Remember this exchange from Season 1’s fourth episode, “Family Ties?”

Caroline: How come you don’t sparkle?
Damon: Because I live in the real world where vampires burn in the sun.

Well, we mention the scene where Damon was thumbing through Caroline’s copy of Twilight because the notion that the Salvatore brothers don’t twinkle like bliss-dusted fairies at dawn topped the list of reasons people think TVD kicks Twilight’s butt. “Vampires don’t sparkle. Plain and simple,” wrote SharathvFavorite. (Here, here!)

‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Bites Into Top 2011 TV Characters

27. Klaus (“The Vampire Diaries”)
The vilest of all vampires, Klaus had been nothing more than a whispered foe until he made his big, bad debut on the CW’s “Vampire Diaries” earlier this year. The hybrid (he’s half bloodsucker and half wolf) is nearly impossible to kill, and we’ve got to believe he’s used his nefarious powers of compulsion on us, because we certainly didn’t expect to find him so … appealing. Klaus (played by Joseph Morgan) is the quintessential emotionally battered bad boy (daddy issues!) who girls can’t help but find utterly irresistible. It doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes (if not the carotid) either. -Amy Wilkinson
