At The Vampire Diaries‘ PaleyFest panel in Los Angeles last week, fans were treated to an early look at the just-aired episode of the heart-pounding series, and, as a result, were made aware of the shocking reveal that came at the end of the fantastic hour. The crowd was understandably floored to find out that Alaric (Matt Davis) is the person responsible for the string of murders in Mystic Falls, and equally stunned when it was revealed his killing streak is a result of his magic ring. (The ring begins to have bad consequences after being used to resurrect a person several times.) And boss Julie Plec told the crowd during an un-streamed portion of the panel, the bombshell is just the tip of the twist iceberg!

Did The Vampire Diaries’ Alaric Saltzman just turn into the town’s biggest threat?
For weeks, a mysterious serial killer has been targeting members of the original founding family. Thursday’s episode revealed that a similar string of murders took place in the early 1912’s and that one of the show’s central characters, Alaric (Matt Davis), may be the culprit. Meredith initially suspected Alaric, which proved absurd to everyone else in Mystic Falls. However, after Elena read an old Gilbert journal, she deduced that Alaric could be the one unconsciously carrying out the murders because his ring could be cursed.

Tonight’s long-awaited return of “The Vampire Diaries” will contain a lot of juicy flashbacks. “1912,” which executive-producer Julie Plec recently admitted to us was at least partly inspired by her marathon viewing of the hipster-hot British soap “Downtown Abbey,” takes a look at a pivotal moment in the relationship between the Salvatore brothers. Generally a flashback-heavy episode means plenty of opportunities to watch our favorite bad-girl Katherine Pierce in action.
