Nina Dobrev on Ian Somerhalder Breakup: “People Aren’t Defined by Their Relationships”

nina-dobev-cosmopolitan-cover-inlineNearly three months after splitting from her Vampire Diaries costar Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev is having the time of her life hanging out with her gal pals — just don’t call their get-togethers pity parties.

“That’s not what our friendship is about,” she tells the September issue of Cosmopolitan of her connection with gal pal Julianne Hough, who split with love of two years Ryan Seacrest in March. “Unfortunately, that’s how it’s perceived, but there’s more to us. People aren’t defined by their relationships. The whole point is being true to yourself and not losing yourself in relationships, whether romances or friendships.”

The girlfriends have instead been focusing on their own wellness and betterment — Dobrev is even planning on opening up a yoga studio in the near future.

“Yoga changed my life,” she says of staying zen. “Hopefully, it will do that for others.”

“It’s been cool to find an active buddy — there are lots of girlie girls around,” she adds of Hough. “We don’t talk about makeup; we talk about life.”

And the next time Dobrev gets into a relationship, the actress explained, she knows exactly what she’ll be looking for. “You either have chemistry or you don’t, but a lot of what attracts me is a guy’s mind and humor and talent,” she says. “I need to get to know all those things before I fall for someone. I’m not a one-night-stand kind of girl. I’m a relationship girl.”

As for what type of guy she’s personally attracted to? “I’m progressive in some ways, old-fashioned in others,” she explains. “I like it when guys hold the door open and are sweet and thoughtful. The guys on our show are really good at that.”

“A man in a suit looking put together and dapper is very attractive, but I also kind of like the I-just-rolled-out-of-bed, a-little-bit-of-scruff, effortless, not-trying-hard-but-still-sexy guy,” Dobrev continues. “If a guy spends more time looking in the mirror than I do, that’s a problem!”

Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley Reveals His First Love

Last year may have marked the end of The Twilight Saga, but the vampire phenomenon is alive and well on the small screen thanks in part to The Vampire Diaries (CW, Thursdays). At the center of the bloodsucking hit is Paul Wesley, who plays a 165-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore.

As The Vampire Diaries gets ready to wrap its fourth season, Wesley, 30, talked to PARADE about his role on the show, his heartthrob status, and more.

On playing undead.
“My favorite part about playing Stefan is when he gets to explore his own darkness. I really enjoy finding flaws in the hero, and I think Stefan is the hero of the story in a sense. I love finding his faults and what makes him tick. I definitely prefer the dark Stefan.”

On becoming a pop culture phenomenon.
“I had an idea it would take off the way it did because I knew that vampires were very popular, and I knew of [creator] Kevin Williamson’s work, so I had an inkling that this would do well — I just didn’t know just how well!”

Candice Accola: Growing Pains

Author: Jen | May 1, 2013 | Comments Off on Candice Accola: Growing Pains

Filed Under: | Candice Accola, Interviews, Magazines, Non TVD Projects, The Vampire Diaries

CANDICE ACCOLA may chomp on necks as The Vampire Diaries‘s Caroline Forbes, but offscreen, she admits to loving strawberry banana Greek yogurt with Maché granola. Blood is an acquired taste, after all.

“I was excited to sink my teeth in a pair of fangs.”

If Caroline were a real person, would you wanna be friends with her? If there was anything she taught you at all, what would it be?
Caroline has proved to be a good friend as the seasons have gone on. She doesn’t always do everything right, but she tries. Caroline’s reminded me to let myself off the hook when I put my foot in my mouth. Also that I’m not the only one in the world that goes a little koo koo when she’s hosting a party.

Where were you when you found out that Caroline was going to be a vampire? How did you react to it? Were you surprised?
Caroline becoming a vampire was discussed on and off throughout season one. I was excited to sink my teeth in a pair of fangs.

What would you rather date, a werewolf or a vampire?
In my single years, I’m sure I’ve dated one of each!

You play the role of Chloe in Season 2 of Dating Rules from My Future Self; if there would be one dating advice you could give to all the teens out there, what would it be?
Dating is not always easy. However the root of your relationship should make both people in the relationship happy. There should be more happy moments than sad. And never ever should you or your partner resort to name calling. Even if you’re in a fight, you should still respect each other.

Off the TV, what does Candice like to to do?
Watch TV! I love to cook and have dinners with my friends. I love the park. My friends coordinated a glow-in-the-dark ultimate frisbee game, and everyone came over after for chili and cornbread I made the night before. Good wine, food, friends, and family. That’s my idea of a good time now.

Actor + Eco Powerhouse uses Celebrity for Change: He’s Leading the Charge for the Planet, bringing Awareness AND Action. This star of Vampire Diaries uses social media and his foundation to bring on the next revolution.
To save our Species.

Maranda Pleasant: What is it that makes you feel the most alive?

Ian Somerhalder: It’s one of those things that hits you when you’re not even looking for it. It’s a moment when you find those words surging through your mind—“I feel so alive right now.” There’s varying degrees of it. Acting definitely makes me feel so remarkably alive. Sitting on a beach or walking through nature makes me come alive always.

What I’ve started to realize is that social media is not just technology—it’s become its own entity, full of energy waves. These energy waves could be a Tweet about something you are furious about, like the Keystone Pipeline, or a piece of legislation. Instantly, energy surrounds and adds traction, influence, making it come alive. Within hours, this piece of information you’ve just doled out has become a monsoon, a hurricane of tangible energy that is literally circulating the world. It’s helped me sense the undeniable truth of quantum consciousness, the whole butterfly effect. I witness it daily. Being witness to it not only makes me come alive, it enables me to maintain hope.

Thirty years ago, if you wanted to start a campaign against or for something, you had to print flyers, you had to make a million phone calls. Remember presidential campaigns and stuff? It was a very laborious thing. Now we can literally talk to each other in a nanosecond. I’m starting to realize there’s no stopping us now. An idea, a feeling, a movement can’t just be squashed. It’s impossible now.
