‘Vampire Diaries’ Writer Bites Back

When Alloy Entertainment fired L.J. Smith from the popular young-adult book series “The Vampire Diaries” and replaced her with a ghostwriter three years ago, a civil war broke out among fans. One camp swore fealty to the characters and embraced the new books, which still feature Ms. Smith’s name prominently on the cover as the series’ creator. The other, more vocal faction sided with Ms. Smith and boycotted the ghostwritten novels.

“I would not read those books if they were the last books on earth,” said Christina Crowley, a 35-year-old substitute teacher in Riverview, Mich., and a staunch L.J. Smith fan. “I didn’t want to read her characters written by someone else.”

Now, in one of the stranger comebacks in literary history, Ms. Smith is independently resurrecting her stories about the adolescent undead. She’s publishing her own version of “The Vampire Diaries” digitally on Amazon, as fan fiction, creating a parallel fictional universe that many hard-core fans regard as more legitimate than the official canon.

L. J. Smith’s new Vampires Diaries series

Author: Jen | January 15, 2014 | Comments Off on L. J. Smith’s new Vampires Diaries series

a new blog post from Lj Smith (the writer of the TVD book series)…

I’m very pleased to finally be able to make this announcement. I apologize for having kept all of you waiting so long, but getting everything finalized took longer than I initially thought it would. As some of you probably know, Amazon has launched a new area called Kindle Worlds. This is a place where people can write fan fictions based on certain books, movies, shows, games, and music. The Vampire Diaries is one of the series that Amazon has obtained the license to include in their Worlds. This means that I can continue to write my version of The Vampire Diaries. (Remember, these books are written as fan fiction and are not part of the official series.

See below for the book “covers” and descriptions of the novels.

The Evensong arc will pick up more or less where Midnight left off and takes place in an alternate world from the official books that follow Midnight. The three books in this arc are Paradise Lost, The War of Roses, and Into the Wood. The first novel, Paradise Lost, and the first part of the second novel, The War of Roses, will be available

Q&A: The Vampire Diaries creator L.J. Smith on writing and losing the series

Author: Jen | October 28, 2012 | Comments Off on Q&A: The Vampire Diaries creator L.J. Smith on writing and losing the series

Filed Under: | Books, Interviews, L.J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries

As promised in our October feature story, Your Mom’s a Twihard, here are the highlights from our big interview with L.J. Smith.

Before there was Twilight, there was The Vampire Diaries.

L.J. (Lisa Jane) Smith’s first teen vampire romance novel came out more than 20 years ago. She wrote four books for the series by 1992, before calling it quits for nearly a decade to help take care of family business.

When Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight hit the shelves, Smith got a call that The Vampire Diaries books were mysteriously back on the bestseller list. So, she wrote three more books for the series and was set to write another trilogy when Alloy Entertainment Inc. and HarperTeen hired a ghost writer to finish the series with shorter books that fit the new The Vampire Diaries TV series better. The Secret Circle, another series by Smith, was also passed to a new author for the same reason.

Now, Smith warns aspiring writers to be wary of the words “work for hire,” which she says helped “mutilate her child limb by limb and destroy it.” Salt Lake magazine sat down with Smith, who has 20 plus books published, to get her thoughts on losing the series, her thoughts on the fans and what she’s doing right now.

Let’s start with the origin of The Vampire Diaries.

“I’m no longer writing them, but when I originally signed the contract, I had written two hardback books, which came out to good reviews and no sales because they had the ugliest covers of any book I’ve seen in my life. I was teaching public school, a kindergarten class with a lot of special ed kids, and I had these two books behind me when I got a phone call from a book packager. I didn’t know what a book packager was, but they asked if I would like to write a vampire trilogy, and that became The Vampire Diaries. I guess one of their editors had read one of the books I had written, which were slightly scary, and thought I could do a trilogy for them with romance, supernatural elements and maybe even a little humor in it.”

Is that the sound of angry Vampire Diaries fans wielding pitchforks I hear?

The Vampire Diaries Season Two was released on DVD this past week and within its packaging was an ad for the upcoming release of a new Vampire Diaries trilogy called The Hunters, with the first novel in the series to be titled “Phantom.” While this might bring some people a bucket load of joy, there is one thing on the cover that might induce enough rage to rival that of any temper tantrum Damon Salvatore has even thrown.

is anyone else going to continue to read the series, even though Lj isn’t writing the books anymore?
