Vampire Diaries masterminds Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec convened at the ATX Television Festival on Sunday to reminisce about their 15-year working relationship — and ended up dropping some serious gems for TVD fans.

Here are seven of our favorite revelations, both about the CW drama’s history and what’s still to come.

* Williamson initially balked at the idea of making a show based on LJ Smith’s Vampire Diaries books; he wanted to make something that was more Dark Shadows, less Twilight.

The bros are getting the whole gang together for Comic-Con. And by the whole gang, we mean everyone from Kevin Bacon, to the guys from Supernatural, to Mike Tyson.

In a press release, Warner Bros. Television group announced plans to pull together 15 different series, including five shows making their debut at the San Diego convention. They’ve previously announced a three-hour event on July 26 which will include the premiere of the anticipated Batman-prequel Gotham and footage from the upcoming pilot for The Flash, but they’re also promising the return of several of their biggest shows.

Participating in the convention in San Diego will be: the Following’s Kevin Bacon; The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder; Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins; The Flash’s Grant Gustin (Arrow); Constantine’s Matt Ryan and Harold Perrineau (Lost); The Originals’ Joseph Morgan; Childrens Hospital’s Rob Corddry; Mike Tyson Mysteries’ Mike Tyson; and cast members from Gotham.

Producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash), Greg Plageman (Person of Interest), Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals), Jason Rothenberg (The 100), Rob Thomas & Diane Ruggiero-Wright (iZOMBIE, Veronica Mars), Kevin Williamson (The Following, The Vampire Diaries), will also appear.

In addition to the announced screenings of The Flash‘s pilot, there will also be complete screenings of Constantine and iZombie, which follows a medical student (Rose McIver) who has to readjust her life goals after becoming one of the undead. There will also be footage from a new episode of Teen Titans Go!

Sitting under a palm tree, in a chair at Poquito Más,my favorite little taco stand in Burbank California next to the CW&Warner Bros. Why is that cool? Because, I just realized that 5 years ago, almost to the day- I was sitting right here drinking an iced tea waiting for my food and going over my lines before Auditioning for Damon Salvatore, just before I walked into the studio to get this show. Wow! 5 YEARS! It’s been an amazing time since then. I’m so grateful to the powers that be at CBS, The CW&Warner Bros for taking a chance on me and giving me this role. Even though I bombed my 1st Network test at the CW…Kevin Williamson had to fight tooth and nail for me-I LOVE YOU KEVIN FOR YOUR VISION, DIRECTION, BROTHERSHIP AND CHANGING MY LIFE.You, Julie Plec and this team really created something special. We all thank you, the devoted fans and the audience of this thing we call, The Vampire Diaries Love you all Ian and Damon

Jan 23rd: ‘The Vampire Diaries’ bosses reveal the seven biggest debates from the writers’ room, and the two smallest

Jen | Categories: Interviews, Julie Plec, Kevin Williamson, The Vampire Diaries, TV Series, TVD 100th Episode | Comments Off on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ bosses reveal the seven biggest debates from the writers’ room, and the two smallest

Five seasons in and 100 episodes later, the writers behind all things related to Mystic Falls, the Salvatore brothers, and of course, doppelgängers have given us countless twists, turns, and heartbreaking memorable moments. But what were the stories that turned out differently than they expected? And if that’s the case, what had been their original plan? Was Elena originally going to remain a vampire? Actually, no. Was Jeremy always going to come back from the dead? Again, not so much. We caught up with executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries to get a look back at seven of the biggest debates from the writers room over the past 100 episodes, as well as a glimpse into two storylines they never questioned and the real reason why the Originals are immortal (Hint: It wears a suit.).

Check out the biggest debates below:

Will the show have flashbacks? Believe it or not, those flashbacks that you have come to know and love were not always in the playbook. “It was one of the most hotly contested debates of our entire experience because Kevin [Williamson] was very very very aggressively opposed to the room’s desire to do flashbacks and basically tortured us for a good month and kept explaining all the reasons why flashbacks were not good writing and why it would be a terrible mistake and kept playing devil’s advocate, forcing the room to fight harder and harder and harder for why flashbacks would work, and I’m sitting there in the middle being like ‘Oh God, I don’t know,’” Plec said. “And then Kevin finally harrumphed and insisted that we take a vote, and it was very intense and very scary. It was a blind vote, and everybody had to write down yes or no and put it in a hat. He was playing the role of stern father very well and when we counted all the votes and he finally showed what his vote was, his vote was yes. That was the resolution of whether there would be flashbacks on The Vampire Diaries, so I think what he was doing was just making us really fight for it and prove that it was a necessary element to the show, and it turned out to be a good thing for him to make us fight because we realized all the great ways we could make them work, and they’ve worked like a charm ever since.”
