There are many people who live and die by the expression ‘my body is a temple,’ but Ian Somerhalder is not one of them. Thanks to his mentor, New Ager and alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra, Somerhalder believes that his body is, in fact, the Earth itself.

“When someone asks you, ‘What is the environment,’ typically you’d say, ‘The natural world that surrounds us.’ But when I first started spending time with Deepak, he said, ‘Let me offer up this information: If you view the world as separate from yourself, why would you want to take care of it? We ultimately have the same biological processes as the world.’ The rivers, lakes and streams are the cardiovascular systems carrying all our vital nutrients. Trees are carbon copies of the human lung; coral is the human brain. We’re all connected. It’s all the same shit, literally, and if you understand [this], then your idea of the world around you changes dramatically. You don’t want to destroy it anymore; you want to love it. You want it to thrive, to live.”

Sep 8th: Driving change: Ian Somerhalder says we need to ‘humanize tech’

Jen | Categories: Ian Somerhalder, Ian Somerhalder Foundation, Interviews | Comments Off on Driving change: Ian Somerhalder says we need to ‘humanize tech’

While many of today’s millennials prefer hailing a ride-sharing service to owning a car, the generation after that might not even learn to drive if the promise of self-driving cars becomes reality.

That should make Ian Somerhalder happy. When he’s not starring as Damon Salvatore on TV’s “The Vampire Diaries,” Somerhalder is an outspoken advocate for conservation and green energy. Self-driving cars — which aim to reduce the number of vehicles on the road — play into the green-tech movement Somerhalder cares so deeply about.

Even so, Somerhalder says he’s taking a cautious view of automated vehicles. “I’m so wanting it to work and be flawless, but I’m also so aware of how tech fails,” Somerhalder, 36, says on a break from filming in Atlanta. “Unmanned cars and drone technology are really going to change the world in a very expedient manner. I just hope we have our heads screwed on straight and that the people who are really going to benefit financially are not buying and selling our policymakers.”

Jul 31st: Ian Somerhalder writes about his visit to Children’s Hospital

Jen | Categories: Fan Experiences, Ian Somerhalder, Ian Somerhalder Foundation | Comments Off on Ian Somerhalder writes about his visit to Children’s Hospital

My life presents me with a ton of opportunities to engage with young, creative, inspiring individuals. This weekend was no exception. Last Saturday, I got to visit one of the children’s hospitals here in Atlanta and was truly blown away by these kids. I am at a loss for words. Their strength in moments of excruciating pain as they fight life threatening diseases, while inspiring, also fuels their creativity. And while I went to connect with these kids and share with them some of the “Blood Brothers” shirts that Paul and I created (the two of us will personally donate funds from the sale of these shirts to several causes that are closest to our hearts), I ended up in awe of these children, and the artist inside each and every one of them. What they are creating themselves from their own hospital rooms was nothing short of incredible. Some of them were kind enough, and brave enough to share some videos/short films that were online, and one girl even had her own youtube channel! I honestly can’t wait to go back in the hopes of creating a day dedicated to film/media/acting workshops, because I’m pretty sure they could teach me a thing or two!

This was truly a life changing experience, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to share it with all of you.

Love Ian
