“In the beginning I was a very old vampire who was going to live like two episodes,” Daniel Gillies explains to TVGuide.com. “They didn’t know I was going to be a brother, I [just] was a henchman.” But Elijah has transformed from being terrifyingly powerful in his knowledge and skills, to a still powerful vampire, but one with a distinct moral compass and compassion for Elena who Gillies calls a warrior.

‘Vampire Diaries’: Daniel Gillies on why we love vampires

Author: Jen | February 17, 2012 | Comments Off on ‘Vampire Diaries’: Daniel Gillies on why we love vampires

Filed Under: | Daniel Gillies, Interviews, Season 3, Spoilers, The Vampire Diaries, TV Series

Daniel Gillies plays formidable Elijah foe-turned-ally in Season 3 of “The Vampire Diaries.” After being resurrected for the fourth time in the series, Gillies shares his insights on the show’s star, Nina Dobrev, who plays small-town doppelganger Elena Gilbert, the future of the Original vampire clan and the classical nature of his character. But Elijah isn’t Gillies’ main focus — upcoming projects include the NBC medical drama “Saving Hope,” with “Smallville’s” Erica Durance and Michael Shanks, and a new film, “Broken Kingdom,” with Rachel Leigh Cook that he wrote and directed. This is Part 2 of an interview with Nardine Saad; you can read Part 1 here.

NS: You say Elijah has been around for 1,000 years, yet he’s still getting duped by “ludicrous nothings.” Do you consider Elena a “nothing?”

DG: I’m certainly not calling Elena nothing. Yes, that instance with the lake [was a nothing]. But the fact [is] that he can’t identify danger and yet he’s supposed to be — like all of the Originals — this formidable adversary. For some reason, he drops his guard too much.

Fans were rendered speechless in the final moment’s of last week’s installment of The Vampire Diaries, when Original Mama Esther cast a spell that bound all of her children together, with the ultimate intention of killing them. To be fair, her drastic actions were not completely unwarranted — her children are a scheming, murdering group of ancient vampires who treat human beings like their silly little playthings. The lone, sensitive standout, and the only offspring to give Esther a bit of pause, was Elijah (Daniel Gillies).

Unfortunately for Elijah, last night was a full moon — the celestial event Mama Esther needed to cast her wicked spell. EW caught up with Gillies after last night’s do-or-die episode, “All My Children,” to discuss last night’s action and speculate on what’s next. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Tonight’s Vampire Diaries is gearing up to be a big one. After last week’s epic Original family ball, you’d think we’d get a week or two of downtime. But not with this show. The Original siblings will undoubtedly find out that their witchy mother has enlisted Elena to help in this massive diabolical plan to kill them all. Certainly, Elena and Elijah’s complicated friendship will suffer as he learns of her betrayal. Meanwhile, the hints at potential feelings between the two may surface.

We caught up with Daniel Gillies [Elijah] about tonight’s episode “All My Children” and asked whether he thinks Elijah’s feelings for Elena are the real deal. Could they ever work as a couple? Find out below!

Ology: So obviously, last week was a huge episode. Tonight’s a big episode as well. It looks like Elijah finds out Elena betrayed him. What can you tell us?

Elena’s going to be… she’s in trouble. The Originals are sorta using her in order to converge against their own mother. Their mother, of course, has kind of doomed them. So I think they need to fight that.
