Australian actress (TV’s THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, H20) Claire Holt competed in The 26th Annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon, which benefits the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Pediatric Cancer Research Program.

Over 5,000 athletes competed, and this year, $1.17 million dollars was raised. Claire came in first in the celebrity female division with a time of 1:44:34.

I know your dad competes in a lot of triathlons, but was this your first triathlon?
Yes this was my first one. I spent my childhood going to my Dad’s events and always thought I’d like to try one myself, so I finally bit the bullet!

What made you decide to do this particular event?
I loved the idea of the Nautica malibu triathlon because it raised money for a really important cause – the LA childrens hospital and pediatric cancer research. It made the training and effort totally worthwhile.

How long did you train for beforehand? Were you on a rigorous training schedule?
I started training properly around 3 months before the event. I had always been a swimmer and runner but never a cyclist, so that was the leg I focused on the most. It was tough to follow a specific schedule as my work dictated when I could and couldn’t train, but I somehow managed to fit it all in. I tried to swim and run once a week and cycle twice. I also cross trained when I could.

Claire Holt on Competing in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon to Benefit Pediatric Cancer

The 24-year-old actress, who plays Rebekah Mikaelson in The Vampire Diaries, swam, biked, and ran to raise money for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“I try to compete in triathlons every year. When I film in Atlanta, I do other volunteer work and help out at a women’s shelter and watch the newborns while their mother receive career training. That’s what I’m going to continue doing after this triathlon, but I’ll definitely keep training for the next one as well.”

“My training tip is to wake up as soon as your alarm goes off and go and train. Don’t press snooze because sometimes it doesn’t happen. Put your feet on the floor and go out and do it. I try to work out first thing in the morning, so if I have a long day at work, I can get it done before then. It was definitely a new experience; this triathlon required more training than I’ve done in a long time.”

“My father’s a doctor and my aunt’s a pediatrician, so I’ve spent my life around hospitals. I’ve seen the effects of cancer. My grandfather had cancer, and I think the disease affects everyone in some shape or form whether you know someone who had it, or know someone who knows someone who had it. It’s a really terrible disease, and I’ve definitely been affected by it, so it’s important for me to support this.”

“The triathlon benefits pediatric cancer research at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Growing up in Australia, physical activity was a huge part of my life, and if there’s something I can do to help a cause, it’s great. But you have to really commit and put in the hours to compete in an event like this. When I heard about this triathlon, I wanted to be supportive and put in the time and effort to help out.”
