Warning: This post contains spoilers about The Vampire Diaries Season 6 finale, “I’m Thinking of You All the While.” Venture forth at your own risk!
The bad news: Nina Dobrev will no longer be a part of our Thursday nights come Fall 2015. The actress made her final appearance as Elena Gilbert in TVD episode 6×22, saying goodbye to all those she holds near and dear. As for the good news, she’s not dead dead; rather, she’s fast asleep in a magically-induced coma. Thanks to Kai’s cruel linking spell, she will remain tucked away in the Salvatore crypt, napping for as long as Bonnie Bennett is alive.
“We knew we didn’t want to kill Elena because we do want her to come back one day, maybe in the series finale. And we didn’t want her to walk off into the sunset and get a job somewhere because that felt fake,” producer Caroline Dries explained during a recent interview with TVLine.com. “We thought, ‘What could she do that proves to her friends and to the viewers who she is as a person?’ And of course she would make a sacrifice so her best friend could live out the rest of her life. We thought it was fitting that, at the end of the day, after all these sacrifices made on her behalf, she takes the bullet for her friend and goes out Sleeping Beauty-style.”
